Children’s Karate – Ages 8–15
Confidence, Fitness, Discipline And Self-Defence
Karate can give children far more than the ability to kick and punch.
At Bushido Karate, our children’s classes help young people develop confidence, discipline, concentration, fitness and self-belief while learning traditional Shotokan Karate.
Children aged 8–15 can begin as complete beginners and gradually progress through the karate grading system at a pace appropriate to their age and ability.
Training includes the three main areas of traditional karate:
Kihon – Basics
Students learn punches, blocks, kicks, stances and combinations while developing good posture, balance, coordination and technique.
Kata – Forms
Kata teaches students to perform sequences of karate techniques with concentration, control and precision.
Kumite – Partner Training
Kumite develops timing, distance, movement, awareness and control while working safely with another student.
Children also learn the importance of respect, good behaviour, perseverance and using karate responsibly.

Why Karate Can Be Good For Children, Regular karate training can help children improve:
Confidence
Concentration
Fitness
Balance and coordination
Flexibility
Discipline
Goal-setting
Self-control
Resilience
Practical self-defence awareness
Karate also gives children clear goals through the belt and grading system.
Progress is earned through regular training and effort, helping young people understand that improvement comes through practice rather than instant results.
What Happens In The First Lesson?
The first lesson is designed to make beginners feel comfortable.
Students normally join the class and learn some basic stances, punches, blocks, kicks and movement.
The instructor will explain what to do and demonstrate each technique.
Nobody expects a beginner to know karate terminology or techniques before they arrive.
The purpose of the first lesson is simply to experience the training and see whether karate feels right for them.
Does My Child Need To Be Fit?
No. Children do not need to be particularly fit before starting. Karate helps improve fitness gradually through regular training.
Beginners work at their own level while developing stamina, strength, balance, flexibility and coordination.
What Should They Wear?
For the first lesson, comfortable sports clothing is ideal. There is no need to purchase a karate suit before trying a class. A T-shirt and jogging bottoms or similar clothing is perfectly suitable.
Do They Need Previous Experience?
No. Complete beginners are welcome. Students are taught the basics from the beginning and progress step by step.
Will They Be Expected To Fight?
Beginners are not expected to arrive and immediately start fighting.
Partner work and kumite are introduced progressively. Students learn control, distance, timing and awareness before more advanced sparring is introduced. Safety and control are always important parts of training.
How Much Does It Cost?
