What to expect on the Beginners course
Every Karate class is different, but most classes contain basically four elements. The warm-up, which is kept the same every time, forms a kind of checklist so that the whole body can be warmed up correctly. Next is Kihon, which are the basics, these are the building blocks and foundation of Karate, it is the development of Kihon which will lead to Kumite or partner work. The final aspect of a lesson will be Kata (forms), this is a set pattern of Karate kicks, punches, strikes and blocks which will form the basis of the self-defence techniques.
As for what to wear, we recommend any loose-fitting clothing, such as a tracksuit, T-Shirt, shorts, jogging bottoms, basically anything you would feel comfortable wearing whilst doing sports. The question that is often asked is can anyone do karate? Well, absolutely, the reason being that as a small child, you can practice for balance and coordination.
As a teenager or in your twenties, you can practice in a very dynamic way to develop speed and power. However, as you get older, you can simply refine your techniques. So you can practice whether young or old. Karate is something that parents and children can enjoy together, developing their physical and mental strengths.
Our youngest students are just four years old, and our oldest student is now 73 and has achieved his 2nd Dan. Karate is suitable for all ages and abilities.
Too sum everything up Starting karate for the first time can feel like a big step, but there is no need to worry about keeping up with experienced students.
At Bushido Karate, beginners are introduced to karate gradually and at their own pace.
Your first lessons will concentrate on simple fundamentals such as:
- basic stances and movement
- punches, blocks and kicks
- balance and coordination
- correct posture
- simple self-defence principles
- confidence and awareness
- karate etiquette and discipline
You will not be expected to know any Japanese terminology or arrive already fit and flexible.
You do not need a karate suit for your first lesson. Comfortable clothing such as a T-shirt and tracksuit bottoms is perfectly suitable.
Our aim is for you to finish your first class thinking: “I enjoyed that — I want to come back.”
